Butea monosperma is a small to medium sized tree extensibly used in Ayurveda, Unani and Homeopathic medicine and has become a cynosure of modern medicine. Butea monosperma is used as tonic, astringent, aphrodisiac and diuretics etc. The aim of present study was to evaluate anti-epileptic activity of butanolic extract of leaves of Butea monosperma against electroshock induced convulsions in mice. All the animals were divided into four groups of six mice each for electroshock induced convulsions study. To induce convulsions in animals, the electroshock is induced in animal by passing a current of 50 mA respectively. In each study, Group I was served as toxic control, group II was treated with phenytoin (20 mg/kg intraperitorially). Group III and group IV will be treated with Butea monosperma (100mg/kg p. o.) and (200mg/kg p. o.) respectively. The result shows that butanolic extract of leaves of Butea monosperma reduced duration of convulsion and also delayed the onset of convulsions induced by maximal electroshock. The results were expressed as mean±SEM and were statistically analyzed by one way ANOVA. It is concluded that butanolic extract of leaves of Butea monosperma showed antiepileptic activity against electroshock convulsions in mice and reduced mortality.
